Shadow Puppetry Workshops

Shadow puppetry is a strong traditional form in many countries and is a tremendously entertaining form of puppetry that is easy to create. This workshop designates the students as designers and performers, making their own shadow puppets using white crayon, black cards and rods and then placing them on the screen.

What happens:

  1. Introduction to the various styles of puppetry
Showing different types as well as drawing on the students own experiences.
  2. Making shadows
Drawing with white crayon on black card to make the images, cutting them out and placing the rods, creating moving parts (depending on age of students).
  3. Techniques of shadow performance
Working with the flat screen surface and learning useful ways in which to create effects.
  4. Making plays
Group work with the images - creating plays from the images and construction scripts and sounds - working with music.
